Each year Trees for Cities aims to retrain, up-skill and develop individuals in both arboriculture and horticulture. As well as providing trainees with new skills for these expanding industries, trainees are also given the opportunity to test out their newly learnt skills in the variety of projects Trees for Cities runs. Trees for Cities also specialises in working with people who are long-term unemployed.

Trees for Cities' training opportunities are strongly supported by the government's new drive to improve the urban green workforce. As part of this initiative, the the Urban II European Union project is regenerating certain deprived areas around the capial and providing funding for environmental training. Stockwell is currently benefiting from this scheme and Trees for Cities are specifically looking for trainees from this area. Additionally, residents from the Isle of Dogs are fast-tracked thanks to a new funding scheme from the Isle of Dogs Community Foundation and the Tower Hamlets Council.
